Today at 11.10am local time on Long Island in the Bahamas, British freediver, Sara Campbell, who turned 37 on Monday 30th March, set a new World Record in womens freediving of 96m Constant Weight on just one breath.
The dive took her 3 minutes and 34 seconds, and although light-headed on the surface she successfully completed the surface protocol, securing a white card from the judges. On completing the dive, Sara said: "This was by far the toughest World Record I've earned. The emotional journey to 96m and back was just a formality, compared to the emotional journey of losing my mum last year, and struggling to dive in the most challenging conditions I've ever experienced here. I have completed only 17 training dives since I became World Champion in November 2007. I'm delighted to be back!" The 37-year-old was taking part in Vertical Blue 09 in Dean's Blue Hole, Long Island in the Bahamas, which is 203 metres deep. Campbell, 37, managed to reclaim her world title by holding her breath for three minutes and 36 seconds, while diving to 96 metres and returning safely to the surface. "The dive felt great and I'm just feeling fantastic," she told The Times. "At one point I started feeling negative thoughts - 'do I really want to do this?' - but then I told myself not to be ridiculous, just get it done, go for the bottom." Campbell, from Wandsworth in south London, is known as "Mighty Mouse" because of her small height at just under five feet, but large lung capacity which is 22 per cent larger than the average woman of her size. The former yoga instructor took up diving in 2005 and set three world records within 48 hours just nine months after turning competitive. Her speciality is Constant Weight where a diver uses a monofin and the body's own power to propel them through the water. No weights are allowed. Campbell is now aiming to become the first woman to dive to a depth of 100 metres: "I know I can do it, it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when'."

Sara takes three days rest between dives, so assumed the 100m was on soon... Been following it on her site and also various dive 'blogs. I must admit to more than a passing interest in this, as I'm trying to find a time to go out to Dahab to learn how to freedive with her. I floated it as an idea at the recent London GTG, but it sank faster than Herbert Nitsch on a No Limits sled...

Wow--just thinking about holding my breath that long makes me dizzy. That is impressive.

Much as Sara's 3-odd mins is fantastically impressive (awesomely impressive, don't get me wrong), the static apnea record is over 9 minutes! I'm not sure I can even comprehend that. I mean, holding your breath, even in a swimming pool, for almost ten minutes? Mind-boggling... M Quote:
Good luck Sara!

By the way, if you're interested, this is Sara's dive profile, recorded on her D9. Lovely, isn't it? And the D9's pretty cool too!
