Although it may appear to be a pure publicity stunt sort of thing, the historic connection between Rolex and the Challenger Deep goes back to the original Trieste descent in 1960, I also believe that Camerons (first solo) adventure last night was co-sponsored by Rolex.

The original Rolex 'Piccard':

And the original pioneers: http://bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0022.shtml

There is a replica of the 'Piccard' at the London Science Museum, I stumbled across their interesting watch/horology display this summer and dragged the uninterested kids and long-suffering wife around it for a while

It's an incredible feat - I have nothing but admiration and respect for Jim Cameron and all involved... I just think it's a shame that the Deep Sea Challenge watch is so *boring*...

- bigger
- stronger
- thicker crystal

But where's the real innovation? Where's the real design / desire to make something new and amazing? Hey ho. I probably ask too much of my heroes.

I stand corrected. The new watch is a thousand times better looking than the old one. I'm not sure how that's possible but it is.

That new watch is almost as ugly as the first one... That's a remarkable achievement!!!

Bell & Ross had the Hydromax, good for 11,000m and didn't look like a Will E Coyote watch...
