Default Disruptions: The Next Wave for the Wristwatch

I have a feeling the understanding of the "point" of a wristwatch my differ on this forum to that of the writers of this piece on the NY Times blog today...

Cellphones have already muscled onto watches’ turf as a time-telling tool. Now, some of the biggest technology companies are eyeing your wrist, too.

Default I wrote about this a while back...

These devices are, in my opinion, the beginning of the development of truly wearable tech, rather than "watches". I don't see these as the death knell of the wristwatch, and especially not the mechanical watch, but rather, the next steps in bodyborne computers. W.r.t. the NikeFuel "watch", this is a gimmick - it's not even a decent running aid.

My previous article from 2011 is here, in The Prodigal Guide

My watch alter-ego will be getting a Garmin fenix [sic] soon.

Mr Trebus himself couldn't pack more into this latest proper sized GPS watch from Garmin. It ticks a lot of vital functional boxes for me - the 50hr GPS longevity, breadcrumb trail plus all the other bells and whistles (a fair few of which I won't need) of the ABC genre.

Of course, it is a supplemental rather than a primary - as a purest I still prefer map, compass and chronograph, so it will be right-wrist wear rather than left-wrist...

I still remember playing with first-gen GPS back in the early nineties in the military - very advanced stuff then, now most 'phones have them... I think the electronic-do-everything-watch has yet to be properly refined, but with the ongoing march of technology something will undoubtedly crop up that grabs the public imagination in an iPhone/Pad style.
