The problem though now, Jon, is that th"those guys" are pretty much glorified bus drivers now, and from what I understand, in the US they are paid about the same (which I find worrying but I digress).

That is kind of my point.

Time moves on, and what was pretty much the coolest thing slips down toward the warmer parts of the cool wall like cold custard. Moving, but not so you would see it.

And before you know it, sub zero has migrated into nippy, and on into tepid.

Hell, Al has even put up a picture of the GMT II, not just the classic......

So cool it stays from me.

Cool for me but only just I have to say. The mercedes hands, cyclops, undernourished crown (have I mentioned that yet ) and rather gaudy coloured bezels don't do anything for me. I've handled at least one of Al's GMT's and have say, although pretty, I was distinctly underwhelmed.

I know they're an icon but it's just not for me, there's far more interesting and rarer watches out there.

Too true, Dave, sad but too true. I guess the perception of these depends on where you've seen it - I've noticed several rather battered GMTs being worn by experienced display pilots in the historic aviation world, who have probably owned them since new and worn them for many hours in many aircraft. The world-weary, battle-scarred vintage GMT is uber cool for me but the GMT II worn on interest-free? No chance.

Not sure about the coolness, I guess the vintage ones are cool, but I dont have one of those only a GMT11, but is is the one watch out of many that I keep returning to, the one which I wear more than any other and the one which I would keep if all the others had to go. I dont take it off to avoid "wear" nearly as often as I used to and it wears its scars with pride, I dont like the new bigger case models so I guess i'll keep it a while yet

Me and this watch will grow old together.

Cool, but mainly because of its icon status. I don't like the cyclops, and in my line of work every other wrist is occupied by a Sub or GMT Master. Just waaay too common for the "uber" designation. Heck, I actually like the Explorer II better, I think.

Like most examples from the brand of the coronet, this one also seems to polarise people.

For me, it is the only watch I've been prepared to pay full retail for twice in 20 years. No interest free, both times have required serious effort to raise the necessaries. For me, it's an exceptionally versatile watch for everyday use and I love the classic, almost timeless, design. It worked in 1956, it still works today. Of course it has a cyclops and mercedes hands - it's a Rolex and that's how they come. I also don't give a rats who may, or may not, have worn one at some time in history - that sort of stuff is utterly irrelevant to me

Equally, one blokes medicine is another blokes poison, and so it should be in watchdom - be a bloody boring world if we all like the same thing!

I voted uber cool. A friend had 2 1675 Pepsis back in the late '70s and offered to sell me one at a rock bottom good price, but I thought mechanicals wouldn't run on me back then. Besides, I was short of cash myself. Now, I periodically kick myself when I think about it.

When I first went looking for a "nice" automatic in around 1999-2000, migrating from quartz, it was the 1675 that I had in mind to get, knowing at that point that mechanicals WOULD run on my wrist. Sadly, Rolex had long since stopped making the matte dial GMTs and Subs.
